TRAVELING LITTLE MORSELS

Quick Opportunity for a Southwest Companion Pass (By Sept 9)

I wanted to share with you all this email I received from Southwest about an opportunity for a mini- companion pass!

You may have heard about the Southwest Companion Pass. We’ve previously had one and used it to fly around the country, to Hawaii, and even to Jamaica for half off. Typically, after flying a lot or doing some credit card signs up, you’ll earn a pass that lets you buy one get one free on any southwest flight (minus taxes and fees which is typically $5.60 for domestic flights)

This current promotion doesn’t offer the full year long pass but does offer a pass that’s good for 2 months at the beginning of next year.

Before any discussion of how the process works, I need to do my due diligence as a healthcare worker and highlight that we are still in a pandemic, so if you’re an adult who’s not vaccinated, this is not for you. Currently, we are at peak case counts in Nashville, but experts have predicted that they will start falling next week. Who knows? With all that said, it is unclear what the country will look like in the near future. Southwest flights are refundable so you could book a late October or November trip and if it doesn’t work out or you don’t feel comfortable, cancel.

Okay, so how does this promotion work?

You’ll need to be able and willing to take a small fall trip (late September to November 18). If you already have a trip booked that’s still a few weeks out, this would be a great opportunity to cancel and rebook after signing up for this promotion. Flights will need to be purchased by September 9, 2021 and taken between now and November 18, 2021. It looks like you won’t be able to make changes once booked, so it may be difficult to spontaneously plan a trip in these circumstances. Again, Southwest flights are always able to be cancelled. A possible example could be a round trip flight from Nashville to Chicago for $150 per person at the end of October. Just the people that wanted the companion pass would need to fly so Carter and I could also go on a trip on our own and earn the pass that we could then use for Ben and Ellie for the spring trips.

Once the flights are completed, we’ll be issued a pass. When you have a pass, you’re able to book a cash or points flight for one person and add a companion online to let them come along for free. Southwest hasn’t released their January and February schedules yet but the West Coast, Hawaii or the Caribbean Islands would be good opportunities to get a lot of value out of a buy one get one pass.
